Description
In this course, you’ll learn how to read and follow a sewing pattern, choose the right size, cut fabric with confidence, and sew your very own pair of PJ shorts or full-length pyjamas! Perfect for teens who want to start making their own clothes, this class will build essential dressmaking skills in a fun and supportive environment. No previous experience needed—just bring your creativity!
If you’ve never used a sewing machine before:
You can book onto the Monday session which will give you an in-depth introduction to using a sewing machine and we will sew up a cute tote bag.
If you already know how to use a sewing machine – you can go ahead and just book the Tuesday – Thursday option! You must be confident in being able to do the following:
– thread a sewing machine
– wind a bobbin and load it into the machine
– select different stitches and change their length and width
– sew in a straight line
– sew a neat, even seam, starting and finishing with a backstitch and be able to follow seam allowances.
What you will learn:
- All of the above if you book the Monday add-on as well as how to sew a tote bag
- How to read a sewing pattern
- How to take your measurements accurately, cut out the pattern & cut your fabric correctly
- Sew a pair of PJ shorts or trousers, which will teach you hemming, sewing waistbands, inserting elastic, sewing trouser/shorts legs & more
Projects:
Make the Tilly & The Buttons Jamie Pyjamas. The perfect first project for learning to sew your own clothes. This pattern sizing starts at a 22in waist and goes up to a 42in waist. If you fall outside this range please get in touch so that I can source a different pattern for you to use.
what’s included:
- Your own copy of the Jamie Pyjama sewing pattern (worth £13)
- Use of all sewing tools, including sewing machine, needles, scissors etc.
- Fabric and thread for practicing your new techniques
- Fabric & matching thread for your tote bag (if you book the Monday add-on class) (worth £7)
- Fabric & matching thread for your PJ shorts from a selection at Threadquarters (worth up to £15)
- Tea/coffee/juice and biscuits
Fabric for making the shorts is included in the course price. If you would prefer to make full-length pjs you are welcome to either bring your own fabric (you will need up to 2.5m of cotton lawn or poplin) or purchase the additional fabric required to make the trousers (between 1-1.5m extra, it would probably cost about £10 approx). More details on this will be emailed to you when you book.
What you need to bring:
- Nothing! Everything is included.
If you own a sewing machine & would like to learn on your own machine then please get in touch letting me know the make & model. Some beginnner/kids machines would not be suitable for this class.
Skill level:
Complete beginner – if you also book the Monday session
or
Level 1 – if you book straight onto the Tuesday – Thursday session
These classes are tailored towards tweens & teens between the ages 11 – 17 years. The pattern is suitable for any gender, however I’m happy to source a male or gender neutral pj pattern if they may prefer. Please leave a note in the comment box at check-out to let me know.
