PROJECT Overview: The Indigo Smock dress & top

In this course, we’ll be using the popular Indigo Smock Dress by Tilly and The Buttons as the basis for your project. This pattern is all about comfort and style, with no fiddly fastenings, making it the perfect addition to any wardrobe. You’ll be guided through sewing the bodice, which is shaped with bust darts, and the gently curved empire waistline that adds a flattering fit. The floaty, gathered skirt gives the dress its relaxed yet feminine silhouette, but we’ll also explore ways to adapt the pattern to suit your style.

If you prefer a more fitted look, you can add waist ties to cinch in the waist, or if a top is more your thing, we’ll show you how to transform the dress into a simple, stylish top. For something a little different, you can create a peplum top or even extend the pattern into a maxi dress with an extra ruffle at the bottom for added flair.

Whether you decide to make a dress or top, you’ll have the choice of three-quarter flounce sleeves for a breezy look or slim-fitting bracelet sleeves for a more tailored style. Plus, you’ll enjoy the bonus of pockets on the dress version! The Indigo Smock is a versatile project that you’ll want to wear again and again, and by the end of the course, you’ll have a piece you’re proud to show off.

YOU WILL LEARN:

  • Refresher on taking body measurements and choosing the correct size for a perfect fit.
  • How to sew bust darts for shaping and fit.
  • How to insert set-in sleeves for a clean, tailored look.
  • How to finish your seams neatly for a polished, professional look.
  • Basic introduction to the overlocker, and how to use it to finish seams neatly and professionally.
  • How to sew neck facings for a clean finish around the neckline.
  • The technique of understitching for a crisp, professional neckline.
  • How to do stay stitching to prevent fabric from stretching out of shape.

Depending on the style you choose to make you may also learn:

  • How to sew a floaty, gathered skirt (for the dress & peplum top options)
  • How to add waist ties to cinch in the waist for a more fitted look.
  • How to add pockets to your dress for extra functionality and style.
  • How to transform the pattern into a simple top, peplum top or maxi dress with an extra ruffle at the bottom.
