Description

Have you recently got a sewing machine or been thinking about purchasing one? Perhaps you’ve got a machine gathering dust in the roof space somewhere but just don’t know where to begin. Our Beginners Sewing Course is the perfect way to get started. We’ll get you feeling comfortable will your machine, learning the basics and stitching up some great beginner projects to built your confidence and learn new techniques.

Each week we will work on a new project, each introducing a new technique, and build up your sewing skills. See below for the weekly schedule.

YOUR PROJECTS:

WEEK 1 – INTRODUCTION TO THE SEWING MACHINE

What are all those buttons, dials and levers on the sewing machine? How do you correctly wind a bobbin? How on earth can I saw a straight line? We will tackle all of this, and more, in our first class.

Once you have been properly introduced to your machine (or one of the studio machines) and had a practice, you will learn how to sew perfectly straight line, curves and pivot around corners. We have a fun sewing machine ‘driving test’ to see how well you can control the machine (don’t worry, it’s all in good fun) and then learn how to sew the perfect seam.

WEEK 2 – ENVELOPE CUSHION

In week two you will make your first project, a very practical envelope cushion. This is a fantastic beginners project as it’s all straight lines, no corners and a great sense of achievement when it’s complete!

You will learn how to correctly layout and cut a sewing pattern, sew a beautifully straight seam, finish off seam allowances as well as a basic hem. You will be wanting to make a million cushion covers after this!

Cushion pads are included so you will be able to take your cushion home and use it straight away!

WEEK 3 – DRAWSTRING BAG

In week 3 we will move onto making a very practical drawstring bag. You will get to put your pivoting skills into practice with this project, learn how to make a channel for your drawstring as well as a great trick for getting that drawstring in (without using an annoying safety pin that keeps coming undone halfway around!!).

This pattern can be scaled up (laundry bag? shoe bag? gym bag?) or down (jewellery bag? EarPods bag?) to your heart’s desire. Perfect for gifting too!

WEEK 4 – LINED TOTE BAG

Such a useful item – and because we will be lining it, so durable, hard wearing and long-lasting! Learn how to fully line a gorgeous tote bag and how to make straps, plus add decorative topstitching. You will be gifting all your friends with these tote bags next Christmas I am sure!

WEEK 5 – LINED ZIP POUCH

We take things up a notch in our final week with a tricker project. But don’t worry, you will have developed the skills necessary by the time we get to this project. A gorgeous, fully lined and slightly padded zip pouch. Perfect for toiletries, make-up, art supplies, you name it.
